Ron Wollenhaupt is a certified athletic trainer for the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy and serves as the head athletic trainer at Leavenworth High School. In his current role since 2014, Wollenhaupt brings over 40 years of experience at the professional, intercollegiate and secondary school level.

Wollenhaupt is also a mentor to future athletic trainers, while serving as a professor of exercise science at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Because of his knowledge and experience, he has also had the opportunity to work as an athletic trainer at several United States Tennis Association (USTA) Missouri Valley events, and at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

An integral part of the Pioneers’ success, Wollenhaupt’s priorities center around injury prevention, evaluation and treatment of the student-athletes and he can be found on the sidelines of the court, pitch or field. Wollenhaupt is on site at practices, home contests and some road games during the school year, as well as camps and training throughout the summer providing care for the Pioneers. He is CPR/AED-certified and equipped with an AED at all times.

Wollenhaupt earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his master’s degree in education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. His interest in athletic training was spurned while working as the clubhouse attendant for the Omaha Royals in 1974.

In addition to his extended Pioneer family, Wollenhaupt is the father of two kids, Joshua and Olivia. In his free time, he enjoys food and travel, while also staying active with tennis, cross-country skiing and yoga.

The Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy is the official athletic training provider of Leavenworth High School and provides similar services to multiple other high schools around the Kansas City metro area.  For more information about the comprehensive care the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy provides, please visit cmh.edu/sportsmedicine.
